About CIMIC Seminar Series

CIMIC seminar series since its inception has been managed by a sub-committee either under the auspices of Outreach, Ibadaat, or Information and Publication Committees.

The seminar series has been led by Irfan Ahmad since its formal inception in 1990.  During the period Ghassan Abu-Lebdeh, Issam Dairanieh, Ahmed Salem, Muhammad Al-Faruque, and Fatemah Hermes had also coordinated the seminars. Until 2007, it was being managed under the auspices of the Outreach Committee.  Committees are appointed by the CIMIC Board of Directors.

Seminars in 2008 and 2009 were moderated by Shakil Mustafa and Naeem Sheikh, and organized and managed by a committee led by Naeem Sheikh, Irfan Ahmad, Hatim Rahman, and Shakil Mustafa. Stephanie Yousuf led the committee in 2009-10.

Since early 2010 Umair Irfan has been the Seminar Coordinator.

Seminars and Presentations Abstracts

2010

May 28.  Syed Hashmi has been involved from the initial planning stage of Avicenna Community Health Center.  According to 2008 American Community Survey 1-Year Estimates, Champaign County has more than 19000 uninsured residents (10% of the county population), of these 1269 are below the age of 18. Currently, there are only three clinics (including Avicenna), which provide free healthcare to the uninsured patients; while Frances Nelson Health Center –a federally qualified center provides services on sliding scale.  All of these clinics are overbooked, and patients have to wait for weeks or sometimes months at end to see a healthcare provider.  These factors are further compounded by the country-wide shortage of primary care physicians, as alluded to by President Obama in a recent healthcare forum (NYT, 2009).  Avicenna’s strength is its strong pool of volunteer healthcare providers including primary care physicians with considerable medical expertise.

Stemming from a desire to address the healthcare needs in Champaign County and embody the spirit of activism in Islam, the Avicenna Community Health Center (ACHC) was initiated in May 2009 by the local Muslim community, and is now incorporated with the State of Illinois as a not-for-profit organization.  Avicenna is an interfaith, academia-community partnership, which undertakes to work collaboratively with other area clinics, and is leading the efforts toward the deployment of health information systems.

Avicenna is the Latinized name of the astronomer, mathematician, physicist, and physician Ibn Sina (b. 980 CE).  He is considered a father of modern medicine for his discovery of the contagious nature of infectious diseases, and the introduction of quarantine to limit the spread of diseases, experimental medicine and the use of clinical trials and efficacy tests.  It is our hope to recognize his excellence in medicine and promote a healthy lifestyle in our community by providing culturally competent healthcare to the uninsured and underinsured in Champaign County, Illinois.  A short presentation about Ibn Sina’s contributions to medicine and philosophy is provided at: www.avicennahealth.org

2009

Dec. 25.  Dr. Ezuddin Mohammed and wife recently returned to Urbana-Champaign after performing Hajj (pilgrimage to Makkah- one of the five pillars of Islam).  A journey he and wife had longed for all their adult lives, and were on couple of occasions were close to undertaking it, but could not do so, due to external factors.  Dr Ezuddin will mention the important role of intention (niyah) in undertaking the journey, and will share his experience using slides and videoclips, while completing the rituals of Hajj, which brought together more than 2.5 million Muslims from across the globe.  This year the hajjis also experienced torrential rains in Makkah and Jeddah, and were also under H1N1 Flu advisory.

Dec 4:  Last year Professor Dede Ruggles, of the Department of Landscape Architecture at the University of Illinois, taught a semester-long university course at Danville Correctional Center, a medium security state prison for men. For fourteen weeks, she met her class of fourteen students to study the history of Islamic architecture from the earliest mosque in Medina to the great Taj Mahal. It may seem an unlikely subject of interest for incarcerated students in the US- yet they immersed themselves in the history and culture of Islam.  There is also interest among the incarcerated to learn Arabic so they can read and understand the Qur’an better.

Nov. 20.  Avicenna Community Health Center (ACHC)

FREE Blood Pressure Checkups, Obesity, and Nutrition Information and One-on-One Interaction with Avicenna physicians and nutritionist.

This program is only meant for the uninsured and under-insured in the CIMIC community.  Avicenna Community Health Center is a project of the local

Muslim community that originated from the CIMIC Outreach Committee (D’awah-DPC) and is now incorporated with the State of Illinois as a not-for-profit corporation.

Avicenna is scheduled to open Champaign County-wide services from Jan. 23, 2010 at the Dental Circle off Springfield Avenue, Champaign, IL

MashaAllah, the launch of Avicenna is another historic occasion for the Muslim community.  For more information: mailto:info@avicennahealth.org

Nov 3.  PACE, Inc.: Persons Assuming Control of their Environment

"Consumer control" is defined as: significant representation, power, authority, and influence of individuals with varying disabilities in all aspects of an organization that provides services to enhance independence and that seeks to change the political, social, and economic environment and quality of life possible for all disabled persons.

Oct 30.  What is Muslim Mosaic?

The Muslim Mosaic radio show on WRFU 104.5 FM-LP has been in existence since 2006 and is an arm of the Outreach (Daw'ah) Committee (DPC) at CIMIC, whose aim is to give voice to the minds of local Muslim community.  The seminar is intended to bring awareness about the program and recruit new air-shifters and hosts to bring their Islamically-informed perspectives to the airwaves of the greater Champaign-Urbana community.  Hosts can pre-record, host live shows, and interview people. Topics relating to the greater Muslim community or topics informed by an Islamic perspective are the focus of this show.  WRFU is a progressive radio station collective committed to social justice, focusing on public affairs issues and the arts. WRFU airs opinions and debates in an open and diverse forum that focuses on educating and empowering the public. WRFU provides an accessible venue for an eclectic mixture of arts programming.

Oct. 17.  The Color of Paradise (The Color of God/Rang-e Khoda) (video)

In The Color of Paradise, Academy Award nominee Majid Majidi (Children of Heaven, Best Foreign Language Film, 1998) explores the world of a gifted blind boy at the mercy of his father's crippling sense of shame.  Mohammad joyfully returns to his tiny village on summer vacation from the Institute for the Blind, unaware of his widowed father's intentions for him. Mohammad's future hangs precariously in the balance as his father struggles against his destiny, unable to see the wonder of life and love that is so clear to his son.
More than simply being a father-son relationship story, Color of Paradise is a masterfully crafted tale that illustrates how God's Beauty and Mercy are manifested in nature and people. If you like Iranian films in general, and Children of Heaven in particular, then you'll like this. Written and Directed by Majid Majidi.

Oct. 9.  Economic Justice: Islam versus Capitalism

The speaker will talk about the current financial and economic crisis from Islamic perspective.  He will contrast the foundation and the components of the economic systems under Capitalism and Islam.  He will illustrate how Capitalism leads to the creation of virtual economy, which may lead to serious failure (as has been in the case in the current economic crisis in the US and world-wide); whereas Islam develops real economy through mechanisms such as the prohibition of usury, the enforcement of gold standard for currency, and balanced property ownership.
